Hammersmith Stainless Steel Island Kitchen
A compact Hammersmith terrace-house kitchen, centred around a handmade stainless steel island and a glass-box detail linking the kitchen to the new basement.
This Hammersmith kitchen was designed as part of a top-to-bottom renovation of a terrace house, including a new basement and loft rooms. The footprint was not large, so the kitchen needed to be efficient, precise and carefully resolved.
The centrepiece is a handmade solid stainless steel island, welded in Italy, shipped to the UK and brought into the kitchen in one piece. Around it, matt black Fenix Leicht cabinetry, antique mirror and stainless steel worksurfaces create a dark, practical family kitchen with a strong architectural edge.
The brief
Compact, confident and connected to the wider renovation.
The client needed a family kitchen that worked within the limits of a compact terrace-house footprint, but still carried the confidence of the wider renovation.
Several island options were explored before the final stainless steel design was chosen. The kitchen also needed to connect with the newly created basement below, bringing light and a sense of relationship between the two levels.
The design response
A stainless steel centre, matt black Fenix surround.
The stainless steel island became the defining move. It gives the room a strong working centre, while the surrounding Leicht cabinetry in matt black Fenix stays quieter and more controlled.
The units run to the ceiling with a small shadow-gap detail, giving the cabinetry a clean architectural finish. Antique mirror behind the working area adds depth and reflection, while stainless steel worksurfaces on the sink and hob runs connect back to the island.
A signature detail
The handmade stainless steel island.
The handmade stainless steel island is the project's strongest object. Fabricated and welded in Italy, then brought into the kitchen in one piece, it needed to be planned early because size, access, delivery and installation all mattered.
