Oxted HUF HAUS Kitchen & Laundry
A repeat-client project in a HUF HAUS home, bringing together a main family kitchen, compact basement kitchen and refined laundry.
A repeat client came back to piqu while buying a HUF HAUS property in Oxted. The project involved more than one room: a new main kitchen, a compact basement kitchen for the lower living space, and a refined laundry.
The house had a strong architectural character, with timber columns and beams running through the space. The main kitchen needed to work with that structure rather than fight against it, creating a calm, functional family kitchen that felt right for the home.
The brief
Several connected spaces, calm and coherent within the architecture.
The brief was to design several connected spaces that felt calm, practical and coherent within the architecture of the house.
The main kitchen needed to support everyday family life. The basement kitchen needed to give the lower level a self-contained living space for the son and daughter. The laundry needed to turn a utility-heavy room into something simpler and more considered.
The design response
White cabinetry, a bronze island, and a kitchen that works with the timber.
The main kitchen uses white cabinetry with a bronze metallic acrylic island, balancing lightness with warmth and depth. Caesarstone was used for the worksurfaces and upstands, and the kitchen was specified with Siemens appliances.
The design works around the HUF HAUS timber columns and beams, allowing them to become part of the character of the kitchen rather than obstacles to design around.
The basement kitchen gives the lower living space a practical, self-contained feel, with full appliances and good storage in a compact footprint. A utility-heavy room was simplified into a calmer, more ordered laundry space. The photography shown here focuses on the main HUF HAUS kitchen.
A signature detail
Working with the timber structure.
The defining detail is the way the kitchen works with the timber columns and beams of the HUF HAUS. Those elements could easily have made the kitchen feel interrupted. Instead, the design absorbs them into the room, softening the space and making the kitchen feel more settled within the architecture.
